Hot Room Colors

As I mentioned in my previous post on the Top Ten Hot Dorm Products, the number 1 hot trend in dorm rooms (or any room for that matter!) is COLOR! I'd like to take a little time to expand on this.

Rich chocolates and soothing blues

This color combination really shows clean lines of sophistication - the richness of the brown contrasting with the cool, soothing blues make this a room you can feel comfortable in.

Wild zebra leopard and cheetah prints with earth tones or vibrant color
Girly pink pairing up with a wild animal print makes this a fun room to hang out in.

Dramatic blacks with crisp whites

Holy sophistication, Batman! Alright, if you didn't grown up in the 60s/70s you might not get that phrase, but everyone can recognize the beautiful sophistication that crisp white and dramatic black provides. This is a timeless look that will never go out of style.

With the go green influence.. earthy tones… with neutral accents!

Ahh, serene green! There is nothing like surrounding yourself with the feeling of being outdoors. The warm tones of greens and browns make this a room that you can really relax in - and maybe even feel like you are part of the "Green Machine"!

Whatever color you choose for your room let you personality shine through! Surround yourself with the colors you love and you will love your room!

Teen Room Decorating Ideas

Teen’s room has a bad case of the blahs? Need a face lift? Overhaul?

Before long it will be Christmas. What in the world do you get your daughter? How about the gift of a room makeover?

This does take some time, so get the wheels turning now. Begin by isolating a theme or favorite color palette.

She probably wants a more sophisticated look. Hot trends are the animal prints...yes they are STILL very popular and don’t show any signs of decline. Damasks in dramatic black and white is huge!

Mix your patterns. Try blending zebra with damask patterns. Accent with hot colors-aqua, lime, pink. Your teen will love her hangout space.

Consider a small love seat- make or buy a slipcover to update and bomb it with cushy pillows. Cool lighting is a must. String Christmas lights around the room for ambiance.

Go to Goodwill or salvage shops and find furniture to transform. Go to you local scrapbook store and find great papers. Use Mod Podge to affix your selected papers to the furniture tops or drawers for great interest and style. Find a great rug to add warmth and comfort. This can be a great bonding experience…or the ultimate surprise. Décor 2 Ur Door makes the job much easier by providing the designer in a box -all inclusive room shipped right to you! Enjoy!

Color Coordinated Dorm Rooms

Many of you have emailed me to get info on how to tie together your dorm rooms for that coordinated look. Here are a few tips…

  1. Get to know your roommate and her taste.. interests.. and color preferences
  2. Get your room layout and measurements if possible
  3. Move furniture around to max your space.. Consider storage of refrigerator, drawers, etc under the beds
  4. Know that you each should add your personal touches and flair. No need to have cookie cutter rooms. You can have them match but be unique to each of you
  5. Email finds to your roommate if you live far away and talk about your likes/dislikes etc. Value her input and ideas as you are setting the pace for your year together!
  6. Decide who is bring what to the room ie tv, refrig, microwave
  7. Be considerate of roommates decorating budget and balance your ideas/ $$$
  8. Have FUN!!

Decorating a dorm room can and should be an exciting time as you express yourselves in your new and OWN environment. Big thing is to carry the colors across the room from yours to hers!. You can do this in shade variances and patterns. Make sure you have lots of cozy pillows for relaxing with friends. Add fun lighting through paper lanterns, chandeliers or lamps. Photos are a must to personalize your space. Use collages or ribbons to mount them. Get creative. Let those creative juices flow. And yes, email me if you have additional questions. I love to help you create your dazzling dorm rooms.

Wouldn't you rather have her friends hanging at your house? Here are a few tips to ease the growing pains.

  • Choose a wall color that makes you both happy.
  • Select a couple of accent colors to tie in with your color scheme.
  • Lighting should make a statement. Try chandeliers, paper lanterns, Christmas lights etc to add personality
  • Window treatments- keep simple designs like panels or valances. Embellish with monograms, buttons, or ribbons

Designer Dorm

When my BFF and ASID design buddy Donna asked me to help with her daughter Lauren’s dorm room makeover at a local university, I was excited, flattered and ready to go!
Lauren ended up with a private room… lucky girl! And lots of space … for a dorm room that is. With an abundance of furniture, we wanted to add warmth and function. The extra bed became a comfy mock futon. Perfect for hanging out with friends.
The extra desk became a vanity.
Notice the towel that is a mock tapestry!! The tassels on the window treatment add flair.
Rugs were added for warmth and comfort. Notice...it’s all in the details. The comforters are Jack and Jill reverses. We even added bling to her door with removable stripes! The colorful refrig becomes a functional accent piece. Wow… we had fun and Lauren is at home in her new suite. Dorm Sweet Dorm! You go girl!! Be happy Lauren and bloom where you are planted!!

Before and After

Wow! I can’t believe it! I made it through my first dorm/college season, and I still have hairs left on my head… gray as they are!! Thanks for blessing and supporting my business. The shipments have been steady and the feedback very rewarding.

Last week, I sent my daughter back to FSU and prepared her new room in the ADPi sorority house at FSU. Her room was going to be on the sorority recruitment tour, so the pressure was on and the time limited to do the 24hour extreme room makeover.

After the initial furniture rearrangement and cleaning, the fun began. We used custom bed risers to get the extra storage under the girls beds. Then we added custom tailored dust ruffles to hide the under the bed essentials. Storage crates are a must for keeping items grouped and organized. Next came the custom bedding and pillows. We used duvet covers with down insets for a comfy yet functional bed covering. The window treatment was mounted at the ceiling to maximize the height. We used 2 inch ribbon to make a colorful trim around the room. The highlights were the customized word stickers in ADPi, monograms, patterns and even the McDonald’s logo. This is our last name and her big sister/roommates as well, so we enjoyed the creative explosion here. Lessons learned… make it fun… make it yours. Enjoy the year. Keep posted to www.tranformyourdorm.com

For many new and innovative decorating ideas.
